5 Ways Volunteering Improves Health
1. Life Lessons
There are countless lessons you learn as a volunteer and every experience is different. It could be something straightforward, like how to build a house or grow a successful garden. It might be learning how to eat healthy on a shoestring budget from someone on a fixed income who has been denied food stamps.
If you listen carefully during your volunteering, you will also find other life lessons. For example, you’ll learn to help in the way someone is asking for help, rather than helping in a way you believe they need help or in the way you would like to be helped yourself, if you were in their situation. You may even come across a situation that teaches you how to create boundaries and limitations, allowing you to give without draining yourself or your resources. These are life lessons that you get to carry forward into the rest of your life.
2. A Sense of Purpose
Volunteering is a fabulous way to raise your spirit, because it gives the giver a sense of purpose, something to wake up for in the morning. Someone else is benefiting from your willingness to help.
3. Gives Hope
Volunteering also raises the spirit of the receiver, because whether it is a cat or a human, it sure does feel awesome to know someone cares about YOU and is taking time to stop all else in their busy world and say, “You are important.”
4. Internal Reward
Do you know that feeling you get when you eat a piece of chocolate cake or whatever your special treat food is? You get that same feeling when you volunteer, except you get to burn calories and have a happy heart without all the thoughts of should’s and shouldn’ts that often come with cake.
5. Changes the lives of people, animals, and planet
Can you picture one of those days? You know the kind. It feels like everything in the world is pushing down on you and then you drop your lunch on the floor … the straw that broke the camel’s back. Volunteering is like taking a pitchfork and removing the pounds of straw that are sucking the breath out of life, giving the receiver a way to reset. Whether you are helping a person, an animal or the planet, you can rest assured, the good you did is going to get paid forward!
