Did you know the well known “fact” we hear about our genetics controlling our fate was only a really believable idea that people quickly bought into and formulated other conclusions off of? That’s right, Francis Crick’s Central Dogma of Molecular Biology was a hypothesis not a hard proven fact.
Move over Crick, there is a now a field of genetic study call epigenetics, which looks at how genes are impacted by things like stress, diet, exercise, and environment. Scientists are finding these factors have a level of control above our genetics. Let’s use stress as an example. People who practice the relaxation response not only reduce stress, they actually change the expression of genes involved in immune function, metabolism, and insulin balance.
Factors like stress, diet, exercise, and environment can determine which aspects of your genetic code are turned on or off and thereby determine what your busy little cells read and interpret.
