Unlike my dog Chas, who LOVES the cold and gloomy weather and feeds on it, there are a lot of people affected by the weather in a very different way. If you are one of these people, it is likely that on sunny days, you feel sunny and and on gloomy, overcast days, you may develop a headache, feel sluggish or suffer from a severe case of the gumpies. I’m going to skip talking about sunny days, because feeling sunny is pretty awesome. Here is how you can conquer the gloomy days and feel sunny from the inside out.
1. Listen To Uplifting Music & Dance
Select a few songs that you know typically uplift your spirit and inspire you to dance. This will change the way you are thinking about your day and get your body to release its own natural chemicals to induce a state of “sunshine”.
If you are feeling sluggish, the last thing you want to do is move. Your body works similar to a car battery, in that as you use it, it recharges itself vs letting it sit idol causes the energy to leak out and be lost. Practice qigong, tai chi, kung fu, go for a walk, jog or be like Chas and RUN LIKE THE WIND! The hard part is getting yourself started. Once you start the benefits come quickly.
3. Eat Lighter Foods & Eat Less.
Overeating causes heaviness and drowsiness. Eat a little less today. Try dedicating these days to smoothies, salads, fruits, veggies, nuts, seeds and soups. This will keep you feeling light and not add to the bogged down feeling.
4. Be Present
Having your mind in the past or the future saps energy, because it is usually associated with fussing or worrying and creates anxiety, while being present is associated with the here-and-now. You’ll find there is always something pretty darn awesome about the here-and-now. When you find yourself in the past or future, remind yourself “now” is really awesome and choose that.
5. Use a blue light, bright light or a Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) light
Bright lights and certain light frequencies can assist some folks in elevating their moods. If you find yourself feeling better when you are in well lighted spaces, turn on a few more lights to help lift your mood.
